Western Digital Unveils Ambitious Storage Roadmap for the AI Era
Western Digital is stepping into a new phase in the race for AI era infrastructure. They've just announced an ambitious roadmap for storage technologies, aiming to exceed 100 terabytes in capacity. This move highlights a growing understanding that the future of AI heavily relies on efficient big data storage. At their "Innovation Day 2026" event, the company revealed a dual-path approach using both ePMR and HAMR technologies. This strategy allows them to gradually increase storage capacities while keeping energy efficiency high and ensuring a smooth transition for customers. Currently, their 40TB UltraSMR ePMR drive is undergoing qualification with hyperscale data center operators, with commercial production expected in the second half of 2026. Western Digital is targeting 100TB capacities by 2029. In parallel, Western Digital also announced new performance-boosting technologies. These innovations will double bandwidth and improve input/output performance, which is crucial for supporting AI workloads and reducing the costly reliance on flash storage solutions. They also launched a low-power hard drive that cuts electricity consumption by about 20%. This helps lower the total cost of ownership and boosts operational sustainability. These strategic moves show the company is repositioning itself as a key provider of storage infrastructure in the AI-driven data economy. In fact, about 90% of their revenue now comes from AI and cloud computing.
