Egypt's Parliament Holds Hearings on Protecting Kids Online
Hey there! The Communications and Information Technology Committee in Egypt's House of Representatives, led by MP Ahmed Badawy, is getting ready to hold some big hearing sessions tomorrow. They'll be talking about how to set rules for children using social media apps and websites. This move really shows that Egypt is serious about making the digital world safer for our younger generations and protecting our community's values. These sessions will bring together four key ministries: Communications and Information Technology, Education, Higher Education, and Social Solidarity. Plus, important regulatory, religious, and community groups like the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, the National Council for Women, Al-Azhar, and the Church will also be there. This wide range of participants highlights the Parliament's commitment to crafting balanced laws that consider educational, social, and technological aspects all at once. This parliamentary action comes after a directive from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the 2026 Police Day celebrations. His aim is to regulate how children use social media, helping to reduce the negative behavioral and health impacts of too much screen time, all without limiting their rights or stopping Egypt from keeping up with new technology. MP Ahmed Badawy stresses that these hearings aren't about imposing strict bans. Instead, the goal is to create a balanced legal framework that focuses on protecting children, strengthening national identity and community values, and setting up the right tools for monitoring and educational guidance. This upcoming law is seen as a proactive step to keep pace with global digital changes, ensuring kids can grow up in a safe online environment, especially with social media platforms spreading so quickly and bringing new challenges for families, schools, and society as a whole.
