Global delivery company DoorDash has announced its decision to withdraw from four markets in the Asia-Pacific region: Qatar, Singapore, Japan, and Uzbekistan. This move is a direct result of increasingly fierce competition and shrinking profit margins in these countries.
DoorDash operates in these markets through its subsidiary brands, like Deliveroo and Wolt. The decision follows a review of local market conditions that lasted several months. The company plans to reallocate some operations, including boosting investment in engineering roles within the United Kingdom.
This strategic shift comes at a time when global food delivery companies are re-evaluating their international expansion strategies. They're facing rising costs and stronger local competitors, such as Grab and foodpanda in Singapore, and Meituan's Keeta platform in Qatar.
DoorDash confirmed that exiting these markets isn't expected to significantly impact its overall financial performance, noting that these countries represented only a small portion of its global business.
The company had previously strengthened its presence outside North America by acquiring Wolt in 2022, followed by Deliveroo last year, as part of its international expansion strategy.
Indicators suggest that competing with large regional players drains capital, with limited opportunities to achieve market leadership. This is pushing global companies to focus on markets that offer a clearer path to sustainable growth and long-term leadership.
