Egypt Teams Up with ILO to Transform Job Market and Boost Startups

In light of rapidly accelerating global economic challenges, the Egyptian government is intensifying its efforts to boost labor market stability and drive development. It's doing this by expanding its cooperation with the International Labor Organization, a move that shows a growing understanding of how important it is to connect economic and social policies.

Cooperation Aims to Build a More Efficient Labor Market

A recent meeting between Dr. Ahmed Rustom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and Eric Oechslin, Director of the ILO office in Cairo, highlights a strategic direction for improving Egypt's employment system. The focus is on three main areas: providing decent job opportunities, developing skills, and supporting startups.

This approach isn't happening in isolation from global economic shifts. Instead, it's linked to an effort to restructure the local labor market, making it more flexible and better able to handle changes, especially with the growing importance of the digital economy and entrepreneurship.

From “Growth” to “Sustainability”

The Minister of Planning emphasized that the partnership with the ILO is based on a vision that goes beyond just creating jobs. It aims for sustainable economic growth built on an effective partnership with the private sector. This idea reflects a shift in how the economy is managed, moving from just focusing on growth rates to also considering the quality of that growth and how it improves living standards.

The focus on "decent employment" also stands out as a key indicator for measuring the effectiveness of economic policies, covering aspects like the work environment, fair wages, and social protection.

Geopolitical Challenges

In a related context, Rustom pointed out that global uncertainty, caused by geopolitical tensions, is putting increasing pressure on emerging economies, including Egypt. This is prompting the government to adopt more flexible and proactive policies, based on strengthening "economic immunity."

This concept reflects a move towards building an economy that can absorb shocks. It does this by diversifying income sources, improving the efficiency of productive sectors, and learning from past crises.

The Egyptian government is prioritizing economic stability by supporting vital sectors like agriculture and industry. It's also taking steps to tackle inflation and ensure essential goods are available. Furthermore, it aims to adopt the best international practices to boost the economy's competitiveness, all within a vision that positions the private sector as a key driver of growth.

International Praise and Ongoing Support

For his part, Eric Oechslin praised the policies the Egyptian government is implementing to deal with the fallout from global crises. He sees them as a clear commitment to protecting the labor market and supporting the most affected groups.

He affirmed the ILO's continued support for Egypt's efforts to develop employment policies. This will happen through partnerships focused on integrating youth and boosting entrepreneurship, alongside expanding into "green jobs" and digital transformation, aligning with modern global trends.

This collaboration between the Egyptian government and the International Labor Organization represents a significant shift in managing employment issues. It's based on connecting economic development with building human capabilities, which is a fundamental pillar for achieving comprehensive and sustainable development in the coming period.
